Round Table Discussion: 20 Years EU-Enlargement: A Slovenian Perspective

On May 1st, 2004, the biggest EU enlargement with ten new member states, primarily from Central and Eastern Europe, took place. The expectations and enthusiasm at the time of enlargement were immense. What is the economic, social, legal, and political impact of the enlargement after two decades? What are the prospects of the EU strategic autonomy ahead of the EU parliamentary elections and in the context of multiple global crises? The discussion will be held from the perspective of Slovene's experience with EU membership, and it will be taken from different disciplines (law, politics, and other disciplines).

Matjaz Nahtigal

Matjaz Nahtigal is head of the Chair in International Relations, Faculty of Social Sciences, University of Ljubljana. He teaches courses in international law and international development. He graduated from the Faculty of Law, University of Ljubljana, where he also completed his doctorate. He continued with his graduate studies at Harvard Law School, in the United States, where he finished his master's and doctoral program and obtained a degree in Science Juris Doctor (SJD) in 2001. He studied the areas of legal reforms and inclusive and transparent institutions in the Central and East European Countries during the period of transition and post-transition.
